You may have downsized to a condo / apartment and your dog is used to a big back yard. It could also just be that your dog has more difficulty getting out and about now and you need another alternative. Using an indoor dog potty with real natural grass is the perfect solution for you and your dog.

Start a new routine

Training an older dog to use an indoor dog potty starts with transitioning into a whole new routine. Dogs are very familiar with routines and thrive in them. After you have you new indoor dog potty with natural grass installed you want to begin a new morning routine of bringing your older dog out to the dog potty first thing in the morning. This is the time of the day that they have the most urgency to urinate and it is the perfect time to train them to use their new dog potty area. Make sure you do this for two weeks straight and they will know that their new dog potty area is an acceptable place to urinate.

Verbal Praise, Commands, and Treats!

When training an older dog to use an indoor dog potty it is much easier than a puppy many times because you are very familiar to the commands and words of praise they will respond to. Every morning make sure that you use the command that they are used to on their walks. Some people say “Go Potty”, “Go Pee Pee”, etc. you know your dog best so use whatever command you know they will understand and is familiar. When they do use their new dog potty area be sure to follow this action with positive reinforcement through verbal praise and a little treat that you hide in your pocket for them. You may also want to try putting their leash on them and taking them out to their potty area as to simulate what it feels like to go for a walk.

Dogs are drawn to naturally grass and have been urinating on it all their lives when they go on walks. If you use anything other than natural grass you are in for a much harder time.
